The Chestnut Wood Quail, a species that has come under threat due to habitat loss and climate change. I was so fortunate to be able to see a family of five of these elusive little birds

For me, it can be tough to keep my heart open without frequent tears.

So often, when we feel lost, adrift in our lives, our first instinct is to look out into the distance for the nearest shore. But that shore, that solid ground, is within us.

The anchor we are searching for is connection, and it is internal!

“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up.”

A small bachelor group of mixed-aged elephants - including a couple of large tuskers - throwing up dust as they head directly towards us. This is an image I've always wanted to capture, but have never previously been in the right position at the right time.

They are popping up everywhere in the forest now. One of the many reasons I love autumn.

vulnerability, fragility, tenderness...

Happy 'roid week, day 2/image 1.

This was shot with a polaroid sx-70 sonar, long exposure with a bit of movement, the emulsion was transferred onto water color paper. The pressed flower was glued onto photo.

Great Wednesday everyone!

Very much the baritones of the bush, one of my favourite sounds in nature is the low grumble of an elephant as it uses its trunk to break through branches, munching on the most palatable leaves. These are the famous old bulls of the Ngorongoro crater where trees are relatively scarce at this low elevation, but the grasses are more favoured among older elephants.

Despite being a widely revered creature, elephants are hugely vulnerable to poaching, habitat fragmentation and global warming. Let's do what we can to protect this iconic keystone species.

So... this answers the age-old question "what's the last thing a rabbit sees?"

On a different note, if you're familiar with Sam the Eagle (The Muppets) then I think we know who was the inspiration for the character.

Crimson Waxcap, Humphrey Head.

Hygrocybe punicea is a species of agaric (gilled mushroom) in the family Hygrophoraceae. It has been given the recommended English name of crimson waxcap. The species has a European distribution, occurring mainly in agriculturally unimproved grassland. Threats to its habitat have resulted in the species being assessed as globally "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Records of H. punicea from North America (where it is called scarlet waxy cap and occurs in woodland), East Asia, and Australia require further research to see if they represent the same species.

The Norwegian Natur & Foto Magazine organized for the 7th time the largest, likely most prestigious, Nordic nature and wildlife photography competition.

With its fantastic nature, unique light, magnificent wildlife and plant life, Nordic nature is in a class of its own and the magazine wants to promote that via the Nordic Nature Photo Contest, which is international and open to everyone. All images must be shot in one of the Nordic countries, Norway including Svalbard, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, the Faeroe Islands and/or Greenland.

One of the images I sent was a high key image of an Apollo (Parnassius apollo). In Finland, the beautiful, elusive, though vulnerable Apollo butterfly was one of the first species of insects declared endangered in the country and is thus very hard to find. I have tried to photograph it throughout the last few summers, though not always with success.

However, there is always a chance to get lucky... and I did... back in July 2016. Went to an area in the South of Finland where the Apollo flies in limited numbers. I searched, stayed patient and got 'awarded'. The Apollo visible, in this now awarded image, was either not warmed up properly, or simply lacking energy, as it was extremely calm for some 20 minutes providing me however with enough photographic opportunities. I converted this particular image into a high key B&W using Silver Efex Pro, but kept the 'eyes', though partially hidden as the wings were closed, red.

As you all know, I am on the never ending pursuit of that next ‘cracking shot’ … and long may it still continue. Happy days! For further information on the competition, please visit www.nnpc.no/en/

Close-up of this giraffe seen in Amboseli, Kenya. Giraffe are listed by ICUN as "Vulnerable".

Vulnerable tree.

It was rather amusing to embellish this fragile tree, by giving it a fanciful crown. No significant post processing, but waiting for the right illuminated cloud to pass. The rising sun didn't reach the valley yet. Despite the modest light, the soundless lake surface gives rise to remarkable reflections.

I'm very grateful for all your visits and would like to thank you for stopping by, and any comments you may leave. Much appreciated, Frans...

I had my laptop stolen from my house... there was a robbery last night whilst we were all out of the house. I lost a lot of work.. both photographs and written work. I have learnt to back up my work the hard way. I haven't lost a massive amount, as I back up now and again, but still it's frustrating. We had CSI round today to take finger prints, was so interesting to watch them dust around.

So annoying, there were quite a few pictures I'd wanted to upload... but now they are gone :( this is just an old shot I found, I had more hair then haha.

Well apart from that I have had nice things happen to me. Having such fun work experience at the moment, assisted a filmed photo shoot for a magazine cover, and will be assisting another cover shoot again soon. Such great experience, I'm learning so much.

This little beauty suddenly burst open and revealed the stamens with lots of yellow pollen, something I had never seen before...

Dicentra's flowering period: April to May, arching sprays of dainty, rose-pink, heart-shaped flowers appear in late spring above fern-like, fresh green leaves.

They come in white and pale pink too.

A single flower of Dicentra spectabilis, about the size of the tip of my thumb, it will never cease to fill me with wonder and marvel at the intricacy and beauty of Nature.

Southern Ground-hornbills are both culturally and ecologically important. They are hailed across their sub-Saharan range as the thunderbirds or rainbirds. They are also a valuable flagship species for the savannah biome as they are easily recognizable and with such large spatial requirements, any successful conservation action in even one of their expansive territories benefits all the other savanna and grassland species, including threatened species such as vultures, wild dog, and cheetah. Their populations continue to decline towards being "Critically Endangered" in South Africa. The reasons for their decline are predominantly loss of habitat to bush-encroachment and development, overgrazing, large-scale monoculture, loss of large nesting trees, besides secondary poisoning, lead toxicosis from spent lead ammunition, and electrocution on transformer boxes.

The Potoroo is a small native marsupial, characterized by its compact body, long tail and rounded ears. They are generally a solitary species, living in forests and scrublands, where they forage for insects fungi, grass, roots and berries. Predators include foxes and cats, and loss of habitat also contributes to their declining numbers. They are listed as vulnerable, but not yet endangered.

In this field of photography / a harnass feels / like an impediment.

We're never so vulnerable than when we trust someone.

I'm sorry guys, the previous photo sucks! I'm going to re-do that concept probably!
